Today we paid tribute to, and gave thanks for, the life of Maureen Smith who died very recently. Only two weeks earlier we had attended the funeral of her husband, Dennis. So it has been a sad time although an opportunity to look back on their long and proud lives, and their contributions to East Woodhay.
They both attended services regularly at St Martin’s, Maureen in particular often coming to 8am Holy Communion; and as Christine pointed out in her address, Maureen insisted on walking from her and Dennis’ house in Heath End up the hill to the church, politely refusing offers of a lift from any of us who might pass her on the way.
Many people will remember all they did for the Village Hall, next to their house, managing bookings and generally looking after it. They are sorely missed but will always be remembered.
Sadly, Maureen’s funeral may be the last service at St Martin’s for some time as the Archbishops have decided, following the coronavirus outbreak, that public worship should be suspended until further notice, although the church remains open. Please watch Christine’s video on our Facebook page.
