Earlier this month, on 7th February, I was reminded by a member of his family that the day would have been Gerry’s 96th birthday.
Gerald Bevan, and his wife Dorothy (Dot), were close neighbours of mine and also good friends; Dot still is. Sadly Gerry died in 2016; the obituary notice is here.
Another very important reason for remembering him is that he supplied the public address system which is still used at the annual St Martin’s Guild fete (due to be held this year at Malverleys on the Spring bank holiday 25th May).
Gerry ran his own electrical business. Some thirty years ago I took over responsibility for setting up the system, immediately next to the main marquee. I used to collect, and sign for, the various components (loudspeakers, supports, amplifier, microphones, cables etc) from Gerry and return them after the fete had finished. A few years later Gerry retired from business and generously donated all the equipment to the fete. Apart from a few running repairs, the system remains in use today.
The obituary notice refers to his “kindness, generosity and humility”. We at St Martin’s continue to benefit from those attributes.
Thank you, Gerry!
